Premier League champions Manchester United overcame the second-half dismissal of Paul Scholes to end Tottenham Hotspur's 100% start to the season with a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane.
England striker Jermain Defoe gave Spurs the lead after just 47 second but United hit back through a Ryan Giggs freekick, Anderson's first competitive goal for the club and a Wayne Rooney strike.
It was meant to be the game when Spurs proved their top-four credentials after four straight wins but instead it was United who showed their steel, if anyone thought they would not challenge for titles without Christiano Ronaldo.
